A mother tongue is more than just a tool of communication—it is the very essence of one’s identity and cultural heritage. Guided by this belief, the global Tamang community has been actively working to learn and safeguard its native language, no matter where in the world they reside.
Interest in the Tamang language has grown significantly since the Bagmati Provincial Government officially recognized it as one of the working languages of the province. This recognition has inspired not only members of the Tamang community but also government officials, service providers, and other stakeholders to learn and engage with the language.
Amid this growing enthusiasm, a major digital initiative—the “Tamang Language” YouTube Channel—has been launched to promote Tamang language learning through technology. Accessible from anywhere across the globe, the channel offers an easy and interactive way for learners to study the language online and explore its linguistic and cultural richness.
Celebrating a Lifetime of Contribution
The channel pays special tribute to Amrit Yonjan Tamang, a prominent linguist whose lifelong dedication has made a lasting impact on the preservation and promotion of the Tamang language. For over four decades, Amrit has been engaged in extensive research and teaching, authoring nearly 70 publications in Tamang and Nepali that span linguistics, grammar, lexicography, and language studies.
In recent years, he has expanded his teaching to both Tamang and non-Tamang learners—conducting classes in person and online in Nepali and English. His approach centers on Grammatical Lexeme, or root-word-based instruction, designed to help students grasp the structural foundations of the Tamang language. Currently, he is collaborating with fellow experts to compile a comprehensive Tamang dictionary, a project of great linguistic and cultural significance.
Weekly Learning, Global Reach
The “Tamang Language” YouTube Channel releases new videos every Sunday at 7:00 p.m. (Nepal Time). The content covers a wide range of topics, including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, conversation practice, songs, and cultural themes. Viewers are encouraged to share their feedback and suggestions in the comments section, helping shape the direction of future episodes.
The channel’s creators hope this digital platform will reconnect the Tamang diaspora with their linguistic roots and inspire younger generations to embrace their heritage. By harnessing the power of modern technology, the initiative aims to make Tamang language learning accessible, engaging, and globally relevant, while strengthening the bonds of language, identity, and culture.
